7.January.2026

This week, the 46th annual Tsumugi Day kicked off in Amami City. Celebrating Amami Oshima's famous silk - Oshima Tsumugi - it is celebrated every year on January 5th, as a special day designated by city since 1978.

This year's event was held at the Amahome Plaza, and featured a packed schedule including live music, dancing, and even a fashion show! The event space also offered hands-on activities, including a silkweaving experience. The area was buzzing with guests, many dressed in kimonos to celebrate the occasion.

The floors were lined with vendors offering goods made from Oshima Tsumugi, ranging from kimonos to accessories and contemporary attire.

Also onsite was a sampling table for a variety of kokuto (brown sugar) shochu, an island specialty. Sampled from various breweries, the assortment was accompanied by strength and flavour profile charts, offering an in-depth tasting of Amami's iconic beverage. A perfect drink to enjoy while clad in a Tsumugi kimono!

For those arriving in everyday attire, the third floor of the event offered rental kimonos to wear around the event. Just next door was a photography room, perfect for showing off your new look.
Tsumugi Day is an annual event, and one of the best opportunities to experience the amazing quality of Amami's local craftsmanship. Join us next year and see for yourself!
