As we start to approach Amami’s summer beach season, let’s take a look back on some of the highlights of this past winter. While summer is one of Amami’s busiest seasons–with visitors seeking out the glistening blue waters and coral reefs of the island–winter is also one of the best times to visit Amami.

Amami Oshima sees the blooming of some of the earliest blooming cherry blossoms in Japan. Bellflower cherry blossoms, or ‘hikanzakura,’ begin to bloom as soon as the end of January and reach full bloom during February.

The winter months also bring the excitement of whale migration, including the baby calves and their mothers. Going on a whale-watching tour is a great way to have an ocean adventure and see the marine life of the island without needing to dive into its waters. Although you may still get splashed on the boat if the captain feels the need for speed, at least there is usually fair warning to take cover. If you’re especially adventurous, you can choose to be at the front of the boat and take the waves face-on.

Finally, winter is also the season for one of the favorite fruits of Amami. Tankan oranges are plentiful and local restaurants and businesses create combinations using tankan such as cocktails, breads, and even soft serve! Don’t worry if you miss the peak season, however, as certain products made using the delicious fruit are served year round!

When considering future travel plans to Amami, be sure to consider the highlights of winter!
