On March 23, 2023, Amami welcomed back the first international cruise line since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The locals welcomed the travelers with cheers and enthusiasm, and after giving an address, the mayor presented a gift to the captain of the Seven Seas Explorer.
There are many more cruises to come, with both Japanese and internationally-based cruise lines making their way to Amami. The Seven Seas Explorer is scheduled to return on May 6 and May 20, and other ships like the Norwegian Jewel will visit later on in the year.
