Miki

Miki is a yogurt-like drink made by fermenting rice, sweet potatoes, and sugar. It generally has a sweet flavor, but some people prefer a sour taste achieved by fermenting it for a longer time. Traditionally it was used in rituals by ‘noro’ priestesses and made as offerings around 400 years ago; it has now become a household item that is sold even in the supermarkets on Amami.
