Seafood is abundant thanks to the subtropical climate and Kuroshio ocean current that runs along Amami Oshima. Pacific bluefin tuna and Japanese spiny lobster are cultivated on the island as well, making dishes like ‘kaisen-don’ rice bowls topped with sashimi (raw seafood) especially popular. Freshly caught local fish are also frequently on the menus of izakaya pubs, and go great with Kokuto Shochu distilled liquor on a night out.
