Kokuto (Brown Sugar)
Sugarcane has long been a main crop on Amami Oshima, and the ‘kokuto’ brown sugar made by boiling down the sugarcane juice has become an iconic product for the region. Kokuto is considered to be healthier than refined white sugar thanks to the high mineral and vitamin content, and it can be found in various local products, most notably being the Kokuto Shochu distilled liquor made in the Amami Archipelago.
