Mangrove Forest

"Mangrove" is a generic name referring to the ecosystem that occurs in mudflats found in subtropical and tropical areas. The mangrove in Sumiyo consists of Mehirugi trees (Kandelia obovata), Ohirugi trees (Bruguiera gymnorhiza), and various other kinds of organisms. The mangrove forest, spreading out over 71 hectares (2.47 acers) at the point where the Yakugachi river and the Sumiyo river meets the ocean, is designated as a Special Protection Area in the Amami Gunto National Park.
